San Diego Jewish Journal Photography [Survivors]

05.01.08

On Thursday, I watched a collection of images created during WWII, depicting children + families that had died during the Holocaust. I moved about the room at the SDJA as a group of 5th graders presented the slideshow along with commentary to 30 Holocaust survivors, who sat patiently + silently as they relived those unforgettable moments.

Many of the survivors were teary-eyed. I had to fight hard to hold back the tears myself. Seeing the images of children who had to endure that kind of suffering - it really affects you.

Some of the 5th graders were moved to tears as well.

Approximately 6 million Jews died during the Holocaust. 1.5 million of those were children. The Jewish Academy is trying to put up 1.5 million butterflies, designed by the students, around the school in memory of those children who died...in hopes that we will never forget.
